Pikaballs – Spicy Antillean meatballs

Antillean pika balls are small meatballs that you always serve with a tasty spicy sauce. These small, but spicy meatballs are great at a party.. with drinks.. or just for a meal. They can actually always. The amount pika (the spiciness) can of course be adjusted to taste.

We use minced beef for this recipe, but of course the Antillean pika balls also taste great when half-and-half minced meat is used. Just what you like best of course.

The 'heat' in these meatballs can be adjusted to taste. By the way, most of the hot pepper goes into the sauce. The pika balls are especially nice and spicy because of the special sauce that is made with it.

If children eat with it, it is an option to roll a portion of the meatballs in a sauce without pepper (or a little tomato ketchup). That way you can make a variation in almost the same time for people who do not like spicy and for lovers of spicy food!

Freeze / store Antillean pica balls

Pika balls can be frozen very well, both with and without sauce. We recommend placing the balls in a well-sealed container with a lid in the freezer. The sauce can then be poured over it (or frozen separately).

These meatballs are also very suitable for making in advance. You can prepare them up to two days in advance and keep them in the refrigerator. When you need them, they can be reheated (as with frozen pica balls) in the microwave or a pan.

At a party, the pica balls can be served with a skewer. Together with our cheese balls they make every party successful. And do you prefer to eat them 'just' with meals? Then they are delicious with rice and, for example, a fresh salad. But let's be honest: they are also irresistibly delicious with potatoes or funchi. And are you making a little more sauce than usual? You could even make a pasta dish with it!

You can make about this recipe 50 Antillean pica balls.


  • 500 grams of minced beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 Madame Jeanette peppers, chopped
  • 3 bell peppers (preferably in different colors!)
  • 1 can tomato paste (70 gr)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 3 tbsp dark soy sauce / sweet soy sauce
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tl ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • sunflower oil

Preparation of Antillean pica balls

Cut the onion and peppers into small pieces and fry them in sunflower oil for about 5 minutes. (on medium heat)

Mix the minced meat together with half of the onion/paprika mixture, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and the salt in a large bowl. Then knead it all together well.

Make meatballs the size of a ping pong ball. Heat the sunflower oil (on medium heat) and fry the pika balls in it until they are seared on all sides. This takes about 10 minutes.

In the meantime, make the sauce by putting the remaining ingredients in a small saucepan with about 50 ml of water. Then add the sauce to the pika balls in the pan.

Let the meatballs simmer for another half an hour and then serve them together with the sauce. This can be as a snack (on a skewer!) or simply with a plate of rice or potatoes. - Enjoy your meal!
